Fiat Chrysler Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne confirmed today that he met with the CEO’s of Apple and Tesla in the weekend.
But apart from that, not a lot is being said on what happened at the meeting, sending the rumor mill into overdrive.
It is not a secret that Apple has been developing its own self-driving car similar to Google. Apple have plans to merge their iOS software CarPlay into automobiles. CarPlay is said to enable drivers to access info on their iphones while driving…let’s hope it doesn’t use iMaps.
The meeting has got our imaginations running wild (with some trepidation) here at HashtagME with what a iFiatesla Car would look like…which got us thinking what the prototype would look like, which got us thinking what other prototypes were made in the past…especially the ones that never made it. So here is a list of prototype cars that never made it into production
1. Lincoln Futura
You know this prototype. The Lincoln Futura was actually made in 1955 and cost around $250,000 to make (in 2015 numbers just over $2 million). It first starred in the movie ‘It started with a kiss’ but you would probably know it better as the batmobile from the 60’s. The Lincoln Futura was painted black and slightly modified to make it look more batlike.
2. 1914 A.L.F.A. 40/60 Aerodinamica Prototype
Believe it or not this is what was considered as Aerodynamic in the early 1900’s. Built as a road race car its top speed was 139km/h.
3. 1970 Bertone Stratos Zero
First shown at the Turin auto show in 1970, the Stratos Zero was a mid-engined sports car. There are no doors, the whole windscreen is a door which you open, in order to climb in.
4. Peugeot Egochine Concept Car
If you understand the basics of physics you’ll know why this car would make your stomach turn every time you turned… if it was ever made. This concept car was designed as part of an online competition, and is purely design only. Paolo De Giusti the designer said the concept car was an ‘automotive expression of self-indulgence and goes against the grain of more efficient, mainstream vehicles.’…no shit.
5. Rinspeed X Dream (1999)
What happens if you cross a swiss designer with a hovercraft and a pickup truck? ….This….. I want to say more but the picture says it all really. And it is literally a pickup truck with a hovercraft.
All of a sudden I’m not dreading a Apple/Tesla/Fiat car prototype anymore.
