1.Nafea Faa Ipoipo (When Will You Marry?)
Painted by French Post-Impressionist Paul Gaugin in 1892. This Oil painting depicting two Tahitian women was a result of Gaugin’s desire to find “an Edenic paradise where he could create pure, ‘primitive’ art”, instead of the faux ‘primitivist’ art that was being turned out by French painters at the time.
Gaugin travelled to Tahiti in hopes to find this paradise. Unfortunately, what he discovered was an island whose indigenous population had been wiped out by two-thirds. Killed by diseases brought by Europeans while the survivors had been colonised. “Primitive” culture had been wiped out.
Still he painted the Tahitian people as lovers of song and love making.
This particular painting sold in a private sale in Feb 2015 for $300 million USD in a private sale. It is thought that painting now resides in the State of Qatar.
